Study of a Practical FEC Scheme for Wireless Data Streaming

چکیده
FEC (Forward Error Correction) techniques are widely used in streaming data applications. The increasing popularity of streaming over wireless links, however, poses additional challenges because of its high data loss characteristic and the energy/computation limitation of wireless terminals. Consequently, traditional FEC schemes might no longer be suitable. And new FEC scheme is desirable in this context. In this paper, we focus on the EVENODD code to study MDS (Maximum Distance Separable) array codes as a practical FEC scheme. An efficient and versatile decoding algorithm is proposed to enhance the EVENODD code. Compared to two mostly used FEC schemes: the parity code and the Reed-Solomon code, we demonstrate the advantage of the EVENODD code in battling both random and burst data loss, as well as its savings in energy/computation. Both analytical and simulation results show that the EVENODD code is a suitable FEC scheme for wireless data streaming.

Enhancing Packet-level Forward Error Correction for Streaming Video in Wireless Networks
Forward error correction (FEC) is a common error control technique in which the streaming video is protected by adding redundant data to the encoded bitstream such that the original source information can still be recovered in the event of errors or losses. Based on the information on the video content and channel status, an optimal packet-level FEC model can be built to obtain the best video d...
متن کاملFEC-Based Wireless Video Streaming with Pre-Interleaving
Wireless video streaming is a challenging task due to limited bandwidth and error-prone characteristics of the wireless channels. In order to ensure high quality wireless video streaming, error control techniques such as forward error correction (FEC) is needed. It is well-known that, in mobile radio channels, errors are not limited to single bit errors but tend to occur in bursts. In order to ...
متن کاملAdaptive Packet-Level Interleaved FEC for Wireless Priority-Encoded Video Streaming
Packet-level Forward Error Control (FEC) for video streaming over a wireless network has received comparatively limited investigation, because of the delay introduced by the need to assemble a group of packets. However, packet-level interleaving when combined with FEC presents a remedy to time-correlated error bursts, though it can further increase delay if this issue is not addressed. This pap...

In this paper, we evaluate the impact of accurate 802.11 based wireless channel modeling on the efficiency of dynamic Forward Error Correction (FEC) schemes in Motion JPEG 2000 video streaming systems. We derive a compromise on the suitable trace length for practical estimation of Packet Error Rate (PER) at decoder side. We demonstrate the validity of the derived trade-off using a real JPEG 200...
متن کاملBandwidth Aggregation with Path Interleaving Forward Error Correction Mechanism for Delay-Sensitive Video Streaming in Wireless Multipath Environments
Multipath transmission which uses multiple paths for data transfer has been used in wireless networks to improve the performance of end-to-end transmission. However, wireless networks suffer from high packet loss rate, variations in end-to-end delay and available bandwidth. Hence, the Forward Error Correction (FEC) mechanism has been proposed to recover lost packets by adapting to the changing ...
